Observation Narrative
This plot is representative of herbaceous meadow communities found in old clearings bordering the headwaters of several streams on the Alleghany Mountain east flank. These communities are generally dominated by poverty oat grass (Danthonia spicata), mountain oat grass (D. compressa), and rough stemmed golden rod (Solidago rugosa), with numerous associates which may be locally dominant in discrete areas. The vegetation in this plot features an abundance of bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum), which may indicate past fires. Succession to woody vegetation appears to be very slow, but in the long term should be toward red spruce (Picea rubens) or red spruce-hardwood mixture.
